CHESS CONGRESS.
SOME INTERESTING GAMES
Per Press Association. Wellintgon, April 21
The Chess Congress was continued to-'day"and this opening, when the second round of the championship was completed and the third round was commenced. Details of the play: — Second Round.—Davies v. JonesBlack responded to a Ruy Lopez opening with the Morphy defence, .and matters were fairly even for a few minutes; then bad play lost black knight for a pawn. Davies, hastily playing to recover his pawn, sacrificed a knight, and the attack passed to Jones, whose opponent overlooked the fact that by the advance of one of the black’s pawns he would lose a knight or a rook. After a hard fight Davis lost the knight and resigned on the 43rd move. - Freeman (Auckland) v. Rev. Fox (Tinwald).—Freeman won on the 41st move.
Connell (Wairoa) beat Sainsbury (Gisborne) by default. Barnes v. Rutherford. —The position was exceedingly interesting when play was suspended. Kelling v.- Kummer.—The position at the end of the sitting appeared likely to end in a draw. Third Round. —Kummer v. Davies. —Unfinished.
James v. Barnes.—Unfinished. Rev. Fox v. Mason.—A win for the Aucklander on the 46th move.
