BAKERS’ COUPONS.

NOT LIKED IN HASTINGS. Press Association, Hastings, April 10. Bakers’ coupons or the cash system meet strong public disapproval owing to bakers demanding fourpence cash from customers who decline to use coupons which are sold at 3s 6d a dozen. Much correspondence appears in the local press and last night a largely attended public meeting unanimously resolved that this meeting is in favour of cash as against credit wherever practicable, yet considers the purchasing power of cash should equal that of coupons, also that bakers should accept each others’ coupons. The meeting also discussed the price of coal and resolved to urge Government to establish a State depot at Hastings, the price of coal being 11s 6d per quarter ton, as against 7s 6d in Wellington.
