Mr Barnes’ resignation of his position as Secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers is due, he declares, to the North-East district Engineers’ Association setting itself above the whole body, and wasting the Society’s strength. If trade union officials were to be flouted ■without reason, the effectiveness of trade unionism would be weakened, and collective bargaining undermined.
