POLO.

Press Association,

Wellington, April 4. The Wellington Polo' Club held a sports meeting at Miramar Racecourse this afternoon. The principal events resulted:— Polo Oup: Jemima 1, Ohatteress 2, Zephyr 3. Hurdles: Vixen 1, Paradox 2, Whalebone 3. COMMENTS BY THE POST. The Post says :—Rangitikei, who in the handicap competition were placed|qn scratch while Hawke’s Bay received a fgoal, were favourites in the final for the Savile Oup in much the same degree. They undoubtedly justified the preference in the actual play, for they had the best of it, and attacked most of the time. They failed to make good, however, and Hawke’s Bay won on their lightning rushes. The whole game was generally deemed the finest exhibition of polo in the tournament. It was fast in the extreme, and the pace told heavily on the ponies. At one stage Hamish Wilson’s black mount lost all interest in the proceedings, and knelt down, like a camel, took a bite of grass, and refused to budge until prepared to resume the game. The players also suffered. McKenzie. the only member of the Ha wke’s Bay quartet who had hitherto come through the ordeal unscathed, received a crack on the brow, and played out the rest of the game with a bandage round his head. On the play he was easily the most brilliant man on the field. It was due to his marvellous defence that the Rangitikei attack so often failed. Next to McKenzie, R. A. Wilson of Rangitikei made the best impression. Dalrymple was brilliant, but strangely ineffective. Levin hit well, but did not excel in horsemanship, Hamish Wilson played a hard game but had no luck. There were certainly two opinions on the ground as to whether the best team won but it was agreed that Rangitikei were not favoured by fortune.
