At the Chmaber of Commerce banquet in the Town Hall, Hull, Mr Price, Premier of South Australia, explained the resources of Australia, dwelt on the white “Australia policy, the comparatively even distribution of wealth in Australia, the closer land settlement policy, the closer land settlement policy, steady development of the wheat, meat and butter trades, and declared that British merchants were too slow in grasping possibilities of extending trade. He promised to direct the attention of Australia to the advantages of Britain’s ports outside London, especially to those of Hull. He ridiculed British Shipping Companies declining the honour of being the first to tie up to the wharf in Adelaide outer harbour because possibly it might cost .them £2O, whereas Germans jumped at the chance. He declared that Australians wished to deal with their kindred on a preferential scale.
