A MESSAGE FROM THE SEA.

Per Press Association. Wanganui, April 3. A bottle has been picked up on the beach at the south of the Wanganui ' River, containing a piece of ship’s shelving paper. The message, as far as can be deciphered, (the paper having become stained by sea water) is : “December 28, 1904, Star of England. Boat sinking—taking to the rafts, send help, off Island of Terra delFuega—James P., steward, S. of E. ” The final name is indistinct, but appears to be like Patterson. It has been ascertained that the Star of England, which at present is in Wellington, was between Sydney and Melbourne on December 23, 1904, and on the vessePs arrival at Sydney a steward was discharged owing to drink. From the appearance of the bottle it is evident it has had a long immersion.
