GIANT GUARDSMAN’S DEATH.
Soldiering as a cause of heart disease was touched upon by the St. , Luke’s coroner recently in the course of an inquest on a giant guardsman. The dead man, Ohasl Norgrove, 34, ,j was night porter at Rowton House, ; King’s Cross, and stood 6ft 6in in ?;;; height. . He was formerly a soldier i in the Grenadier Guard. His widow ;> stated .that he was called up while T ; oh the Reserve strength, and served in the South African war, where he had an attack of dysentery. On £ February 4th he complained of sore ~■? throat. In the evening he appeared worse, and witness went for a doctor % but her husband fell into her arms as the doctor arrived, and died al- I most immediately. Dr. Wm. Thomas < Newton said, there was some valvu- | lar heart disease, and the spleen was enormously enlarged. This was | the result of ague or intermittent ■'-? fever. Death was due to suffocation, the result of an abcsess bursting beside the larynx. The coroner re- ■. marked that heart disease _was fre- x quently found in old soldiers, and was apparently caused by the strain ; of the hard work carrying heavy £ loads strapned on them acting on .<■ the heart. Ague was rare now in England, but before the land was f; so thoroughly drained it used to be very common. The jury returned 5; a verdict of “Accidental Death.” i
