,A .Marton eleven went to Wanganui onTuesday to play the Collegiate School. The coach left Marton soon after 7 and arrived at Wanganui shortly before 10. School won the toss and decided to hat on a hard wicket. Play was very slow to begin with. Jacob 27, Putiki 38 and MoHardie, not out, 14, were the top scorers, the innings closing for '142. Ross 4 for 34 and Signal 1 for 2 were the best bowling averages. Hedges and Arkwright both bowled very well but luck was against them. Marton then went in for 10 minutes before luncli and lost 2 wickets for 8 runs. After lunch Marton went on batting and could only manage to scratch together a total of 35, to which Arkwright contributed being the only one to reach double figures. Putiki bowled very well, getting 7 for 17. School went in again and made 104 for 8 wickets and then declared their innings closed. Wilde 15, Jacob 21, Putiki 14 and Gilbertson 25, were the top scorers. Marshall bowled best for Marton, getting 3 for 14, After tea Marton went in. having-to get3ll in an hour and three-quarters. Marshall and Ross put on 60 for the first wicket, the rate of scoring being quite fast enough to get the runs. Ross smacked everything and Ssoon bad 52, including 10 fours. He then put up a simple one to Wilder at mid on. The rate of scoring slackened very much after Ross and Marshall were out. However, as time was getting short each batsman wont in determined to hit and run for everything. This was done most successfully and nobody was run cut, and at the call of time Marton were within 14 runs of the total wanted with two wickets to fall. Great excitement prevailed as the total mounted and time got shorter. The Marton side were hospitably entertained at luncheon and afternoon tea. by Mr and Mrs Empson, ‘and all thoroughly enjoyed the day. Following are the scores : WAN GANUI. —First Jnnings.
