WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the above was held last evening. Present — Messrs Piraui (Chairman), Spnrdle, Guthrie, Bennett, Cargill, Purnell, Aldridge and Fraser. Mr Aldridge, the new member, was welcomed by the Chairman. Leave of absence was granted to W. Griffiths, Kaitoke, 3 days. A. McDonough, Campbell street, three months. M. Graut, Terrace End, January 27fch to February 17th. The Tnrakina Committee wrote regarding the selection of head teacher. —Resolved that Mr Hewlitt be appointed. Resolved that Miss Lynch be appointed to Makowhai school, and Miss Robson assistant at Raetihi.

Mr Cox was appointed commercial nstructor.

The Education Department notified grants as follows : —£345 for Ohakuue and £324 for Taoroa, for the erection of schools. Letters were received : ' From Taihape Committee, asking that the school be converted into a District High School. —Resolved that the Committee he written to aud informed that steps will be taken as soon as the information required is obtained. From Taoroa Committee, asking that the school be enlarged—Resolved that the Committee be informed that their request will receive attep|iion. From Sanson Committee, a&ing that the school be closed for one week, owing to the death of the teacher’s som— Resolved that the Committee be informed that the Board has no power to close schools, except in cases of infectious diseases, aud that they should have made an application for a relieving teacher £7 was granted for fencing school residence, at Raetihi. Resolved that tenders be called for erecting a new fence at Mangaweka school. It was resolved that if a suitable site be found, tenders be called for moving Rata school.
