From a spectacular point of view the Northern match against the New' Zealanders at Stamford Bridge was a groat success, about 13,000 being present.

The Englishmen were completely outplayed in the first half. Smith scored for the New Zealanders after a brilliant’run, Messenger converting. Only fine tackling by Taylor saved the English line Jfrom being crossed on several occasoius, Wrigley particularly being noticeable for his fine work. After a good bout of passing the Northerners scored, but failed to convert.

The second half saw seme fine passing by Wynyard and Messenger, from vfhich Johnson scored, but Messenger failed at the points. Soon after Todd crossed, and .followed it up by kicking a goal from a try secured by Johnson.
