AUSTRALIAN LABOUR TROUBLES.
MINES THROWN IDLE.
Press Association —Copyright. Received March 17, 10.58 p.m. Sydney, March 17,
The representatives of three of the coastal companies waited on the Premier and stated that they were unable to carry on business because of the mob rule which prevailed round the wharves, and it was hoped the Premier would bo able to place the dispute before a competent tribunal for settlement. The Premier promised to do all he could.
The strikers are actively engaged on picket work on the wharves to prevent the non-unionists from working.
The police force has been strengthened at the troublous points. The Burwood and Lambton (thirteen pits) in Newcastle have been thrown idle owing to the strike. Mr Wheeler, manager of the South Buili Company, in objecting to ten men working at certain places in the mine, brought about the strike of 500 men, and trouble [is anticipated in other mines owned, by the same company.
