GALE IN THE NORTH.
Per Press Association. Auckland, March 9. The easterly gale continued without abatement yesterday, and rain fell almost incessantly. It is still, very bad on the coast, but local conditions have improved considerably. The weather lias cleared up somewhat, the heavy rain having taken off, while the harbour is smooth. • Devonport suffered greater damage by the gale than was at first apparent. Erom Cheltenham beach to Stanley Bay the foreshore is strewn with logs and portions of battered boats, and sundry other wreckage. The breastwork and plantation at the southern end of Cheltenham beach lias been demolished, and the trees on the reserve have been undermined, with the result that many of • them toppled to the ground. The North Shore Bowing Club’s - wooden breastwork, and some 12ft. of made ground, have been swallowed up b\ the sea. ! The borough reserve, at the foot i of the Victoria wharf, was converted J into a miniature lake. The firebell tower at the corner of Vauxhall Road and Church Street was blown down. The Zealamiia, which arrived from Gisborne last night, experienced very thick weather on .the passage. • As the heavy gale was blowing in s her favour it did not much affcci her, but the thick weather greatly embarrassed the navigation staff, y wl l o had a very anxious time. All other vessels experienced sovero buffeting. ,
