The Karamea brought out to Dunedin 31 lobsters from Plymouth hatcheries, England., This is the most successful shipment yet made. A Suva telegram reports that the purser, Welliugs, of the steamer South Australian, was tomahawked by natives at Futuva and was conveyed to Rotumah in a dying condition. Mr A. E. Awdry has been appointed the Marton agent for Messrs Dalgety & Co. The position was I formerly held by Mr Charles Evans, who has now left the district. Mr Awdry is a well-known resident of Rangitikei, particularly among the farming community. Our Hunterville correspondent writes: “I am glad to report that Mr D. McLean is going on well and strong. Last night a strong gathering of the Sports Committee took place. Close on sixteen pounds, membership money, v/as reported by the Treasurer, which in addition to the half century of subs, ought to make the heart of the -Sports Committee glad; and the prophet who predicted failure swears that; he won’t prophesy any more. What was approaching gloom has now been turned into a most genial smile by the effect of the rain, this week. ' Mr W. H. Smith, proprietor of the Advocate, is suffering from an attack, of broncho-pneumonia following bronchitis. In the HJDivorce Court sitting at Gisborne a decree nisi was granted in Annie* Howard v. George Boswell Howard for desertion.

On a creditors’ petition, Wellington Public Service Co-operative Stores have been ordered to be wound up. The Magistrate has appointed an official liquidator. Mr J. Kirk notifies in our advertising columns that he will open on Monday next at Marton Junction an up-to-date tobacconist’s |and hairdressing business. The billiard room attached will contain one of Alcock’s best tables. ' Two unconnected cases of enteric in Wellington have been traced to the eating of cockles gathered in Oriental Bay. This indentation of the harbour is liable to all kinds of pollution, and the Health Department issues a strong warning against allowing children or adults to gather shellfish in such localities. There is no definite information, says the Wanganui Chronicle, regarding the man who is supposed to have committed suicide in the river on Thursday night. The only person known to be missing is Matakatea, a well-known and highly respected native at Eaihaiki, and it is feared he has gone into the river. The Maoris intend to drag the river today. A shipment of about a ton of South Australian grapes were sold by auction at Napier yesterday. The bulk of these were well packed in cork shavings, and came to hand in good condition. They realised to 5%d per lb. J A quantity, however, were sent in baskets without any packing, and these were in very bad order, and brought only Id per lb.
Messrs Thomson & Low, who are buying Mr J. MoEldowney’s Hunterville, drapery, clothing and boot business, and who were to have taken possession on February 20th, but were unable to do so owing to Mr Thomson’s prolonged illness, have now definitely decided to take the business over on March 20th> The new firm contemplate celebrating the event by holding a grand display of all their new season’s goods, the first week in April, when all are cordially invited to inspect the very latest in millinery and drapery, bought specially for the occasion. Mr Thomson is now about and well again, and we wish the new firm every success.
The entertainment to be given on the night of the Martou Sports, promises to be of exceptional merit. It will be more of a musical comedy, and part of the programme will consist of juvenile items. The committee has been fortunate in securing several young artistes from outside districts, and their first appearance before a Marton audience will no doubt be eargerly looked forward to. The Martou performers are practising assiduously and have got a splendid programme for this year’s effort. A large and effecieut orchestra, under the capable couductorship of Mr Bert. Orozier, will contribute selections. It can safely be said ’diat the entertainment promises to be the best yet held in Marton. At Feilding Oourt this morning before Messrs Burne and Haybittle, J.’sP., thirteen cyclists and two drivers of vehicles were charged with riding or driving without lights and were convicted and discharged with a caution. Thomas Lawton, ostler, was charged with having been drunk while in charge of a horse and with having used obscene language. Accused was driving through Awahuri from Feilding when the horse took fright at a traction engine and bolted, w r ith the result that trap and harness were damaged. The incident led to Lawton uisng the language complained of to the driver of the engine. In consideration of the loss sustained by the"acoused the Bench took a lenient view of the case and discharged him on the first charge and fined him £1 and costs on the second.
