TE ORANGA ENQUIRY.
Per Press Association. Christchurch, March .6. The principal witness at the TeOranga Home inquiry to-day wasMiss Margaret Early, who recently resigned from the position of matron of the Samaritan Home in Christchurch. Her evidence dealt entirely with the action taken by the matron, of Te Oranga (Mrs Branting) to get the custody of a girl who had been lodged in the Samaritan Home for a year. Miss Early protested against the girl being returned tO' - Te Oranga, and she was suspended for declining to carry out the instructions of the then chairman to facilitate the transfer. Miss Early said that it had been arranged tosend the girl to a suitable situation, and she considered that the transfer would not be in her best interests.
Another witness, Nurse Morris, formerly of the Samaritan Home, said that the girl had a horror cf Te Oranga. She was very much sur- -- prised to learn that the matron had received’ letters couched in the most t t affectionate terms from the girl. ’ The inquiry was adjourned till Monday next.
