The fortnightly meeting was held last night. Present: —The Mayor, (Mr J. B Trewin), Crs. Darragh, Richmond, Atkinson, West, Bramwell and Goodbohere. Oorrespondance was dealt with as follows _ From Prior and Gillespie, advising that the legal hour for closing billiard rooms in n'eilding, notwithstanding the resolution of the Council, is 11 p.m. If the Council desire to amend the by-law it must do so in the manner adopted in making a by-law. From 80 ratepayers, asking that the water mains be extended up the Makino road, as far as the Makino store. The Mayor stated that £383. was in hand in the water supply account, half the cost of the work. —lt was decided to complete the work required out of this account, as soon as sufficient money is available. From the Health Officer, reporting that the borough was free from infectious diseases, except two oases of consumption, and expressing regret that proceedings were not being taken against property owners who had failed to have their premises connected with the drainage system. From the Manager of the Abattoir, reporting that during the past month there had been slaughtered at the works, 81 heifers. 43 cows, 3 calves, 349 sheep, 41 lambs, and 66 pigs; one heifer, 3 cows and 3 pigs had been condemmed. The total receipts had been £IOB 7s 3d. He recommended that A. Watson’s wages be raised 5s per week, and that he be paid Is per hour for Sunday work. —Report adopted. From the ranger, stating that he had impounded 63 horses, 41 cows and 6 sheep. There had been a loss of £1 13s 6d on sales.—lt was decided to appoint Tuesday as the day for pound sales. The Engineer reported that_ the Sandon road brigde had been injured by tracuion engine traffic, and some stringers would require renewing. The repairs would cost £4O. The Kimboltou metalling contract had been completed.—The Engineer said the bridge was safe for about 3)£ tons. —It was decided to place a notice on the bridge that it was unsafe for heavy traffic. Two tenders were received for alterations and additions to the Council Chambers. From J. A. Gilbertson £123, and A. Barther £llß. Mr Gilbertson’s tender was accepted, the work not to be commenced till April.

The Works Committee recommended that the Engineer be instructed to invite alternative tenders for covered and open drain in North str66t Cr Tolly proposed and Cr. Bramwell seconded that the report be adopted. Or. Richmond doubted whether sufficient information was available as to whether such drain would be effective, and as to whether it might not cause the Council to be responsible for damages. He suggested that the Council also obtain the advice cf Mr Webster.

Cr. Darragh pointed out that most of the trouble with the flood water was caused hy the smallness of the culverts for carrying "flood water across the Kimholtou road. He contended that those culverts should be increased in size rather than that a costly work should he undertaken, which would throw more water in the Makino and flood the laud further down. After much discussion it was resolved by five to four that Crs. West, Richmond and Bramwell, be a committee to consider the matter, and have power to call in outside assistance, consult with the Engineer, and report to the Council at its next meeting. In the Einance Oommitiee’s.report it was stated that the overdraft was £4410, about £I,OOO more-than this time last year. There was £4OO of rates outstanding, and about £l5O due from the Oroua County, re Kiwitea bridge. In regard to the accounts of Messrs Staunton and Williamson, in connection with the furnishing of the Council Chambers, it was resolved that they be held over until the work has been passed. The Council then considered in committee “the course to be taken in the case with the Gas Company. On resuming in open Council it was decided leave the points submitted, in regard to the appointment of a junior counsel, and employment of Mr Skerrett to Mr Bell. It was decided to complete Macarthur strret to the standard of other streets in the borough.
