AWAHURI.
From Our Own Correspondent. A strong body of bnsy men has been engaged for the past two days in preparing the cycle track on the Awahnri Sports ground. The Club have secured what is known as the old football ground opposite the hotel for their grounds and are sparing no pains or expense to make it an up-to-date sports ground. A good cycle track of a quarter of a mile has been banked which should be a very fast one. Through the centre a very even running track is laid out and it is the Club’s intention to have it taped for the runners. A five-acre paddock adjoining has been secured for horses and vehicles. All that is left undone is the erection of horse jumps, tents, etc. On this being done all will be quite ready for a good day’s sport on Tuesday, 17th March. ’ Two very energetic men have had the responsibility of: the chain-stepping, which event is hoped to bring a good revenue in for the Club. Mr J. Hastie met with a painful accident on Thursday last in untying a horse from a post. He got his thumb fastened between the rope and the post through the horse pulling back, taking nearly all the flesh from the thumb. No time was lost in driving him to Palmerston, where he had his wound dressed. We are again looking for rain as tanks are now dry. A grass fire started on Bennett Bros. ’ Buckland farm on Friday. The situation looked very gloomy for a time, but by the hard work of many willing 'hands the flames were overcome after burning over five acres of grass.
