V.R.O. AUTUMN MEETING. FIRST DAY. SCOTLAND WINS THE NEWMARKET HANDICAP. Press Association —Copyright. Received March 1. 5.45 p.m. JFlemington, February 29. There was dull weather for the opening day of the V.R.O. Autumn Meeting. The reserves looked splendid, .and the course was in good order. The Talbots and a large crowd were present, but the attendance was not equal to that of last year. A good field turned oukfor the opening race, and, with the exception of a spill, it was a good race. Portcullis fell, broke his shoulder, aud had to bo shot. But little excitement centred on the St. Leger, the result being fully expected. Mountain King was in fine fettle, and had his own way from the start. Results:— Pines Hurdles.—Sustain 1, Coronation 2, Paraloch 3. Ten others started. Won by six lengths. Time, 3inin 37sec. V.R.O. St. Leger.—Moixntain King 1, Peru 3, Lady Rylstone'3. Mountain King jumped off from Peru, and Lady Rylstone, all pulling. Mountain King passed the stand two lengths ahead of Peru aud four lengths from Lady Rylstone. At the far side Mountain King was a length in front of Lady Rylstone. On approaching the straight Lady Rylstone spurted, hut Mountain King got away on entering the straight, and, unexteuded, won by four lengths. Time, Bmin 6%sec. Newmarket .Handicap. —Scotland 1, Grenadier 2, Akim Foo 3. There were 29 starters. Scotland aud Tangaroa led into the course proper, then Scotland led from Dusky Morn and the rest of the field. Scotland still led across the track, where the Now Zealander then made way for Grenadier, Akim Foo, Mnnjeet, aud Fraquan last. Won by two lengths. Time, Imiu DRy'sec. The race was run in light rain. Sires’ Produce Stakes. —Mother Goose 1. The Brewer 2, Kuban 3. Barley Brew also started. Won by a head, a neck between second aud third, after a good race. Time, Imin 14"{scc. Essendon Stakes.—Apologue 1, Tulkeroo 3, Eooran 3. Won easily by four lengths, the .same distance between second and third. Time, 2miu 37;Csec. Run in rain. Brunswick Stakes.-—Sivori 1, Lady Esme 2, Lancasterito 3. Won by half a length. Time, 2miu 9/4sec.
