TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL.
The Otago Trades and Labour Council on Thursday night passed the following resolution :—That this Council protests strongly against any scheme of immigration by the Government, on the grounds that many men and women in our factories are unable to obtain anything like constant employment. The Council further considers that it would not only be an injustice to workers of the Dominion, but an injustice to immigrants, who would have to compete with our fellow workers, thereby reducing wages and prejudicing the national condition. A second resolution nassed by the Council was that the attention of the Inspector of- Factories be drawn to the allegations that : several factories in Dunedin are in a very unhealthy and insanitary condition, and requests him to take immediate steps to see that the provisions of the Factories Act are complied with. A further resolution urged the Government to pass a Fair Rent Bill.
