The weather cleared up well, with a strong cool southerly wind. Crawford played, but Fielder was unable to do so. Jones won the toss, but preferred to let the Australians bat on a-wicket that had practically been under water on the previous day. Macartney and Noble commenced cautiously to Rhodes and Barnes. Macartney made a single, and then tried to pull. Barnes, but mishit, Crawford getting a simple catch. One for 10. The wicket w giving a little trouble,, although Noble found no difficulty in scoring. O’Connor stayed quite a respectable time, although he played somewhat flukily, and wisely left the ; scoring to his partner. After lie had got 9 he tipped Crawford into the wicket-keeper’s hands. Vi . , Two for 46. Gregory joined Noble, thut [the latter was almost immediately bowled by a fine ball from Barnes. Three for 46. Hill then partnered Gregory. The South Australian got off the mark immediately, and had a dozen up in 18 minutes; but then a really clever catch by Hutchings dismissed him. Hillfgot Barnes'ronnd to leg, though high, but a long way clear of Hutchings. The latter, with a great sprint, managed to nail it in one hand almost on the ground. Four for 64. Armstrong was next, and play was very slow till luncheon, the weather becoming dull. Armstrong was out in"; the second over after lunch, sending Crawford back to him in a simple fashion. Five for 13. Gregory was a long time in getting into : double when Trumper partnered him runs came more freely. Trumper £only got into double figures when he lashed at Barnes, and snicked it to Branncl in the slips. Hansford scored 11, and then lifted Barnes high to Gunn, who”effected a brilliant catch on the Seven for 124. . v Gregory was batting solidly,|makingjmany pretty strokes. Hartigau did not last long. After a single he patted one gently back to Crawford. Eight for 129. Gregory’s time had come. He skied Barnes, and the bowler effected a good catch. Gregory had batted an hour and 40. minutes. Nine for 137. Saunders, the last man, joined Carter. The Victorian was taken behind the wickets off the first ball. Total 137 Bowling analysis.—Crawford, 3 for 53; Barnes, 7 for 60; Rhodes, 0 for 15. THE ENGLISHMEN AT THE WICKETS. The attendance at the adjournment was P.OOO. Fane and Hobbs commenced. The latter obtained a single off Noble’s first ball, but the fourth ball clean bowled Fane. One for 1. Hobbs and Gunn, playing steadily, had 50 on the board in as many minutes. Both had the bowling well in hand, althuogh Macartney, O’Connor, Armstrong, Noble, and Saunders tried to dislodge them. As the wicket improved Hobbs began to take more liberty, bitting brilliantly. The century was compiled in 100 minutes.
Gunn scored his half century in 105 minutes by patient cricket. Noble, who had secured his wicket for 23, came on again at 116, and steadied the batsmen up; but the light failed, and play was stopped at 5.45 p.m. Score; — ENGLAND. —First Innings. The above match is being played at Marton to-day, and at luncheon adjournment Marton had lost four wickets for ISO runs. E. W. Broad is batting in great style, and is still in with ifs runs to his credit. J. H. Miles made 15. F. H. Arwright 14, and K. S. Fnllertpu-Smitb 13. G. Marshall was caught by Mills with .Goldsbnry’s second ball.
