THE MARKETS.
HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. « - Press Association, Wellington, February 17. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, February 15th: — The mutton market is dull. Canterbury is very scarce at per lb nominal; Southland and N. W. M. E. brands B%d; North Island 3>£d; Australian 2%d; River Plate 3d. The lamb market is a shade weaker, but there is fair demand. Following are current quotations:—Canterbury lamb 5%d to 6d, other than Canterbury to 5%d; Australian 4^d. There has been no alteration in the beef market since last week. There has been a further general advance in the butter market. New Zealand is quoted at 16Cs, Danish 151, Australian 148, Siberian 1445. The cheese market is quiet, but firm. White makes are quoted at 61s 6d, coloured 62s 6d. The hemp market is weak. Following are current quotations:—Good fair grade £27 15s, fair grade £26 15s; tow £lO per ton. March and April shipments, good fair grade £27 10s, fair grade £26 10s, fair current Manila £27 5s per ton. The first shipment of hemp from St. Helena proved of good quality and sold at £27 10s. Tow from the island realised £l3. Tiie cocksfoot market is quiet, but firm at last quotation. Following are current quotations for Bradford tops:—36’s, low crossbreds, ls;4o’s, medium crossbreds, Is 2d ; 50’s, halfbreds, Is 6%d ; 56’s, quarterbreds, Is 9%d; 60’s, merinos, 2s l)4d. The market is quiet. Following are shipments from River Plate during the month of January:—Mutton: Loudon 92,309; Liverpool 111.363, Hull 13,892, Newcastle 4000, Cardiff 420, Southampton 1800. Lamb: London 6960, Liverpool 9841, Hull 987, Newcastle 200, Cardiff nil, Southampton 141. Butter, various ports: 11,542 cwt. STUD LINCOLN SHEEP.
Masterton, ehruary 16. Messrs Abraham & Williams, Ltd., report on Mr William Strang’s sale of stud Lincoln sheep:—The attendance of buyers was not large, and several intending buyer’s were prevented from purchasing owing to the extreme dry weather and the consequent shortage of feed and water. The various lots were well drafted, and, taken as a whole, the stock came into the sale ring in first-class order. Several buyers from outside districts were present, but only secured a few lots. A clearance was made at the following prices;—ewe lambs 2 to 2-tooth ewes 21£ to 3'gus, 4 tooth ewes 1% to %% gns, 6 tooth ewes 1)4 to 8 tooth ewes 1 % to B%gns, f.m. ewes 1)4 to ram lambs 2 to4gns, ram 20)4 to 24gns, and three at logos.
