MARTON WATER SUPPLY.

SIR.—I read in your paper of yesterday the peremptory and threatening notice of Mayor McEldowney. I remember once on two previous occasions when the water in the reservoir was getting low other Mayors have informed the people and courteously’requested them *to be careful of waste. Will His Worship be good enough to state the authority from whence he derives power to give effect to hispotice? lam under the impression it is not in the Municipal - Corporations Act nor in the Martou Water Works bylaws, the latter of which-were, I believe, some years ago [held to be almost, if not quite, worthless. If His Worship has no such power, and even if he has, I suggest that a courteous appeal to the people not to waste the town water will be met by the, same good sense as on previous occasions. I congratulate the Mayor that the Council has. discovered the water in the reserwdir is getting low and I suggest the Council be the first to cease wasting the supply. For example a great saving of water and something of expense might be effected if the attendant who guides the “white elephant” that draws the temperance vehicle exclusively used in .the process of cooling the roadway in some parts of Broadway and High street, could oftener be found another job. Then there are several leakages about the town, some of which have been for years. There is also one down Wellington' road, where hundreds of gallons are running away daily. Finally, all yesterday and while Mayor McEldowney’s notice was being circulated, a stream of water’was escaping from a negletced fire-plug in High street! Does no one look after these things?—l am, et °'' A RATEPAYER. Marton, 11th February, 1908.
