HALCOMBE.
A meeting of our school committee was held in Air Purkiss’ office oa the Bth inst. to make final arrangements for the children’s excurison trip to CastleclifE. The Secretary (Mr Adam) reported that he had received replies .from Stanway, Kakariki and Tokoraugi schools. The two latter would contribute about fifty children and a boudoir'* would be present from Stjahway, The complete return tickets would cost children Is 5d and adults 3s. The question of the most." suitable date was discussed and/ on the motion of Mr O. McElroy* Saturday, the 23nd inst., was selected for; the cheap instructive and doubtless enjoyable outing. The secretary was instructed to arrange in advance for the supply of tea water from a gentleman at Castlecliff, who has the reputation of supplying “cups that cheer.” The manager of the opening day picnic reported a small cash balance as the result of the day’s work“and£pleastire which was deemed highly satisfactory, as it shows that our public when appealed to for such purposes respond liberally. One small account was conditionally passed for payment and the meeting terminated.J The annual garden party and sale of work so successfully organised by Mrs Ernest Carr in aid of the “Foreign Mission Fnud” takes place at her residence on Wednesday, the 19th inst. Thanks to the object and warm hospitablity of the management these gatherings have always proved most successful'and that of 1908 will not be an exception. It was with sincere regret I learned that Mr and Mrs Carr will shortly leave this portion of our elec-, torate, .having disposed of their Junction road property to Messrs Bailey Bros., and purchased a 400acre farm at “Stormy Point,” 1 Rewa, where I hope they will live as serenely and happily as heretofore and long continue the good work for which they are so well known dhd highly esteemed in Haicombe. The Peilding Show attracted, a large proportion of our population, , and judging from what I saw of it, this exhibit! on of 'stock, etc., should, now he on a permanent foundation. Certainly the public showed its appreciation of the unselfish labours : that band of strenuous workers in'+r the interests of these districts, by rolling up in great numbers. It is only those who have been connected with such undertakings inH their initial stages that can fully realise, the amount of administrative ability, personal responsibility and unpaid and often unrecognised labour that the founding and running of such institutions entail the managers. It was on “People's Day” I paid my first visitjof inspection to the Feilaing Technical School building and I was gratified to find such .a handsome and well designed structure erected for the purpose of imparting further useful knowledge to onr hoys and girls and fairly fitting them for the keen contests now inseparable from life's ■ racing programme.
The Montgomery’s who made such a favourable impression when last they visited us and of whose entertainments you have written flatteringly, will be here on Wednesday night when no doubt they will be well received. I have to thank Mr McMinn of the Wairarapa Daily Times for further large parcels-of stamps for the Halcombe Invalid.
