XThirty young able-bodied men have sent by the Labour Department from Dunedin to the Catlin Railway WorSys. i At the Dunedin (Yity Court to-day i five defendants, all decent working men or the would have inflicted a .heavier penalty, were fined £3 aip.Y costs each for playing twa-np. /' The 'Athenaeum subscribers at Dunedin strongly opposed the amalgamation with the Free Library aud the Mayor proposes to discontinue further negotiations and proceed with the equipment of the latter institution. At the Wellington Supreme Court to-day John Moffett aud Charles Mack were charged with breaking and entering and theft. Mack was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and Moffett was sentenced to two years and declared to be an habitual criminal. Dunedin representatives interviewed say that the statement that Fire Insurance Companies have practically decided to increase the rates in connection with all classes '-of risks is premature, though they admit that the step cannot he long delayed. One manager stated that for the first time during the sixty .years his company has been doing business in the Dominion the balance-sheets showed a debit for the past two years. Another manager expressed the opinion that the State Department were now beginning to feel their less and anxiously waiting for premiums to be increased.
