THE THAW CASE.
THAW DECLARED INSANE. COMMITTED TO AN ASYLUM. Press Association. —Copyright. Received 1 a.ui., Feb. 3. New York, Last Night. A verdict of not guilty was returned in the Thaw case, on the ground that he was insane at the time of the murder. The judge, deeming his discharge would be dangerous to the public safety, ordered Thaw to be confined in Matteswan asylum lor an indefinite period. THE SUMMING UP AND VERDICT. MOTORING TO THE ASYLUM. Received February 3, 8.47 a.m. New York, February 2. Judge Dowling in summing up emphasised that only such defect of reason, as would make him unaware of the nature of' an act if that act was wrong would excuse Thaw from the responsibility of his crime. The jury were eleven hours in deliberation on Friday and fourteen ballots were taken before they reached an agreement. The crowd cheered Thaw and his wife as they were motoring to Matteawan Asylum. Mr Littleton has decided not to take action at present to hinder Thaw’s committal to the asylum.
