ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. This afternoon Mr T. E. Donne received a telegram stating that George Napier, a porter at the Mount Cook Hermitage, is missing. It is feared that when he was returning from Ball Hut last evening, with some horses, he fell from his horse while crossing the Hooker river. His hat was found early this morning, some distance below the ford. A thorough search is being made by Mr D. McDonald, manager at the Hermitage. Wanganui, Last Night. An old man named James Connon, aged 78, died suddenly on Sunday night. At the inquest to-day a verdict of death from heart disease was returned. 1 Napier, Last Night. A drowning fatality occurred here this evening, Arthur Sutton, a storekeeper, was bathing in the river, near the end of Carlyle sheet, and ; accompanied .by one of his sons and two men, Messrs Chaplin and Moore. After bathing some time Sutton got out of his depth. The others went to his assistance, but all being unable to swim, failed to save him. An alarm was given and the body was recovered half an hour later. Deceased leaves a wife and four children. Dunedin, Last Night. • Advice has been received to the effect that William Allan Brown, aged 19 years, was drowned in Wangaloa creek, near Kaitangata, yesterday. The body lias been recovered. Napier, Last Night. A man, whose name is at present unknown, was killed on the railway line between Napier and f’Port Ahuriri shortly after ten o’clock tills evening. r •*-: *•-- , He is believed to he a sailor from one of the ocean-going steamers in port, and to have wandered on the railway line in an intoxicated condition, with the result that he was run over by the train and both legs broken.
