ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

Pr«ss Association. Blenheim, Last Night. Edward Barry, 19 years, was loading sheaves on a dray on a farm yesterday forenoon, when the load slipped. Barry fell and the wheel passed over his chest. He died this morning. Dunedin, last night. William Hefferman, aged 18 years, son of Mr Hefferman, South Dunedin, was the victim of a shooting accident at Tuapeka Plat yesterday while out rabbit shooting. His right arm was shattered and had to be amputated at the elbow. Blenheim, Last Night. A distressing bathing fatality occurred yesterday afternoon, by which Mrs Arthur Farmar, aged 37 years, her daughter Rona, 17, and Zita Shaw, 12, lost their lives. A party of ladies and children were bathing in the Opawa river outside the town when Zita Shaw was carried off her feet and Mrs and Miss Farmar went to her assistance, but were also carried away. Zita Shaw’s mother was a good swimmer and made heroic attempts at rescue. She almost succeeded with her daughter, and after failing with her, attended to Mrs Farmar, but unsuccessfully. Mrs Shaw then tried to recover the bodies by diving. The bodies were shortly after recovered by some 1 men who arrived after an alarm was given. Lengthy efforts at resuscitation failed. At the ‘inquest to-day a verdict of accidental death by drowning was returned. Mrs Shaw’s bravery, and the prompt action of the men and police was commended by the jury, who were also of opinion that the Council should provide proper swimming baths. The funeral of the three victims took place this afternoon. Taihape, December 30. At the inquest on Thos. Morton, aged 72, who died suddenly while unloading a truck at Ohakune station the doctor’s evidence pointed to his death being due to the rupture of an aneurism of the aorta. A verdict was returned accordingly. Wellington, December 30. The body of a woman named Cecilia Oonolly, wife of Herbert Oonolly, was found hanging in her house at Petone yesterday. At the inquest a verdict of suicide while temporarily insane was returned. It was stated that the woman’s husband had left home early in the mouth and had not been heard of since.
