RANGIWAHIA.

From Our Own Correspondent. , Most of the areas of- bush burntthis year have resulted in good burns, and with the shearing and haymaking continuing without interruption (save the occasional shower that keeps the grass and crops green) local farmers are indeed blessed compared with their' Australian brethren. The increasing number of sheep in the district :has caused numbers of young men this year to take up the blades for the first time to supply the demand for shearers. A clearing sale was held on behalf of Mr O. Macartney at Rnahine last week, when stock and implements sold at ridiculously low prices. The last effects of our local sawmill will be sold iu January at Pukerimu, and will consist chiefly of timber iu lots.

A meeting was held in the Town Hall on the 14th inst., when it was decided to have a Horticultural and Industrial Show in February. Mr F. Pemberton was elected chairman and Mr R. Craig, secretary and treasurer.

The school picnic, held on the Recreation Grounds on the 20th inst., was the most successful yet held, nearly 300 being present.Messrs Boshier, Brown and Meuzies, together with the teachers, were untiring iu their efforts for the welfare and enjoyment of the children and visitors.

Special prizes were awarded as follows :—Dux, Grace Kerr; garden plot, Mr Tompkins first prize bat, George Brown; Mr O. Richardson’s second prize watch, Flactou Homersham ; Mr Oarthew’s special for most industrious girl in school, Beattie Wisdom ; MrG.Winton’s two special prizes for best behaved boy and girl iu lower classes, Max Homersham and Alice Pemberton. Grace Kerr, on behalf of the children, presented Mr Boshier with an electro-plated jam dish as an appreciation of his work as chairman of school committees for the past seven years. Mr Roache was also presented by the children with a picture neatly framed. The approval expressed in this district in regard to the form and the clearness of type of the Rangitikei Advocate is unanimous, and the paper is deservedly more valued even than before. All good wishes for increased circulation for the improved Advocate.
