ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
Per Press Association Napier, Dec. 27. At the inquest on the body of George Vallentine Chatterton Johnson, the jury returned the following verdict: “That the deceased met his death from an acute attack of Bright’s disease, accelerated by a drinking bout. ’ ’ Master ton, Last Night. A sad drowning accident occurred in the Ruamahunga river this afternoon in which Hilda Cook, aged 19, and daughter of Mr and Mrs A. W. J. Cook,' of Wadestown, Wellington, lost her life. A boy named Godfrey Clapcott was in the river swimming, having on swimming wings. The wings came off and Clapcott went after them. He got out of his depth, and commenced to sink when Miss Cook, who was bathing with three other children and who was unable to swim, went after him to try and get him. When she got beyond her depth she sank and was drowned. Another boy named Hunter got Clapcott out of the water. The body of the girl was recovered. She was on a holiday here with friends.
