WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of the Education Board was held yesterday morning. Present: Messrs Piraui (chairman), Spurdle, Cargill, Bennett, Dixon, Fraser. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs Purnell and Guthrie. The following appointments were made:—Eltham, Miss Joukiusou and Mr W. G. Meuzies; Maugawhio, A. R. O’Donnell; Horopito, T. T. Henderson ; Hawera, Miss Bourke. The following resignations were accepted E. O. Wilton. E. M. B. Lynch, A. M. Silby, and I. A. Smith. Leave of absence was granted to B. McDonald, A. Mausou, F. Govau, H. M. Williams, and L. J. McDonald. A letter was received from the headmaster of the Wanganui District High School, forwarding a letter from a parent asking for admisisou of an infant to the school, and stating that in the event of refusal. he ‘(the parent) would test the case. The headmaster also forwarded his owii reply, declining admission.— The headmaster’s action was approved. Martou. —Committee to bo informed that the Board does not pay for unauthorised repairs, but under the circumstances £1 19s of the account forwarded will be paid. Mr Purnell was instructed to report re lavatory troughs, and enlargement of school. Martou Extension.—Martou Extension Laud Company’s offer of a school site accepted with thanks. Turangarere.—£3 Is to be granted for painting. Kaitoke.—£l for £1 to be granted up to £7 for metalling. Poliangiua.—Resolved to pay for half the fence and 15s for addition to shed. Feildiug.—From Committee, ro advance to complete purchase of section to bo added to school ground. —Advance to be made. Normauby.—Application for well and pump.—Mr Dixon to deal with the matter. Rawhitiroa. —Permission given to re-opou school on January 20th, instead of January 37th. Tiritea.—Application for grant for filter.—Resolved to reply that Board’s finances will not allow grants for this purpose.
Taoroa.—From T. C. Adams, ro residence.—Letter received. Table Flat.—Bo application for enlargement, the committee to bo informed that the school lias accommodation for 30, but that more desks will be sent if required. Tiriraukawa.—lf committee can get the work done for a reasonable price the Board will pay for shifting of school building. Silverbope.— Half cost of blocking stream granted. Cadets.—From Wellington Education Board, ro control of public school cadets.—Resolved to approve the Wellington Board’s proposal. , Rata.—From tbo General Manager of the New Zealand Railways re Rata site. The secretary stated that the only communication be bad received about the Department’s intention to take the laud was a chat with Mr Biss, when the latter called at the Board’s office to procure a tracing of the school site.—Resolved to inform the Department that the - Board docs not regard the statement by tlie'Eugiueeras tbo official notice. Mr J. Smith’s resignation (owing! to ill-health) as a member of the Board was received with regret. Mr J. O. Barnicoat was reappointed as the Board’s nominee on the Palmerston North High School Board.
Ke school building at Tokaora, it was resolved to reply that the Board is awaiting the return of the Minister of Education from Auckland. School hours. —It was resolved, in regard to the proposed change in the school hours at the Wanganui District High School for the purpose of giving religious instruction, ‘ ‘ That the headteachers of the Wanganui schools bo instructed that there must he no alteration in the hours appointed by the Board for secular instruction, except by permission of the Board, and that no religions teaching must be given during those hours. ’ ’ It was decided to transfer the account to the Bank of New Zealand, and to pay exchange on teachers’ and School Committees’ cheques. Resolved—That all teachers and chairmen of School Committees be requested to send letters on official business to the Board from the beginning of the year unstamped.
