WELLINGTON DOCK AND SLIP.
Per Press Association. Wellington, Dec. 5. An emergency mooting of the Wellington Harbour Board was held this afternoon to“decidc what action the Board should take now that the Union Steamship Co. has acquired a controlling interest in the Patent Slip Company. The question was discussed in committee. On resuming the Board decided to instruct its solicitors to take steps to acquire the property and assets of the Patent Slip Company, either at a price to be mutually agreed upon or compulsorilr. According to the Hon. T. K. MacDonald, the chairman of the W ellmgton Harbour Board, the Wellington Gas Co. approached the former body with the view of obtaining its co-operation in securing a site adjacent to the Slip, the Harbor Board to acquire the latter, and an agreement to this effect was come to by the two bodies. Meantime the Evans’ Bay scheme was promulgated and the Gas Company informed the Board that it would take no part in this. The Board did not consider that this meant the surrendering of its option to the site near the Slip, but this appears to have been the intention of the Gas Company. The Union Co. has now practically bought the shares of the Patent Slip Company, which are largely held by British investors. The slip was first built by the Provincial Government of Wellington for the benefit of shipping generally, and the company was subsidised for someTyears. Future developments will|be awaited with interest. The scheme to reclaim a wide area Evans’ Bay to provide space for the industrial expansion was approved bv the City Council tonight, *
