Going down the back Earmark' was out by himself, At the fence on the home turn Liberator shoyyed the way to Earmark, but the' latter came down leaving Liberator in front. In tho straight Showman moved up and quickly settled Liberator, the former winning comfortably by two lengths, with a between second and third. Time, 2.55. SECOND FEILDING STAKES, of 500sovs, 5 furlongs. Mr W. E. Bid well's Elevation, San Francisco—Stepfeldt, 8.12 (S. Reid) 1 Mr J. Svmon's Lord Soult, Soult —Lady Antrim, 9.4 (F. D. Jones) 2 Mr E. J. Aborigine and Lord Soult led the field round the turn and down the home straight. At the distance the issue seemed to lie between these two hut Elevation finished like a biilhdog and flashed out on the outside with a groat turn of foot, and ran home a winner by two lengths, with only half a head separating Lord Soult and Aborigine. In the Spring Hurdles the horsos •were staffed oloso to tlio first fence, opposite the stand, mid had little or no tirno to spread, rising in a cluster. J. McGregor, the rider of Lull, became unseated and when tho field had swept past, tho prostrate rider was picked up and brought into the jockeys' room. His injuries were found to consist of a dislocated shoulder, while his spine was also affected. An ambulanco was secured and McGregor was brought to the Palraerston Hospital. Later in the day, in the Kiwitoa Welter, ' Keudrock, ridden by W. Young, fell on the flat near tho sixfurlong post, and Sharkeyn tumbled over him. J. McCombe, the well known South Island horseman, Who rode Mr G. G. Stead's Munjeet earlier iu tho day, was riding Sharkeyn, and when picked up he was found to bo unconscious. On being brought in on a stretcher, McCombo was examined by Dr Martin, of Palmerston, and found to bo suffering from concussion of the brain and a broken rib. Ho had evidontly been n-alloped on. McCombo was also brought over to the Palmerston HosPl At'a late hour last night inquiries wore made as to how tho injured horsorneu were progressing. Wo regret to learn that iu both cases the 'injuries received are of a serious nature. Neither Rendrock nor his rider, W. Young, were any tho worse for the mishap, but Sharkeyn dislocated his shoulder, and has probably had to be destroyed. Two other jockeys, P. Wlutehonso and H. Telford, also received somewhat severe shakings through their mounts, Earmark aud St. Amolia, falling with them in tho Hack Hurdles, but both were able to get about before the meeting concluded.—Times
