TE ORANGI HOME INCIDENT.
Per Press Association. Ohristchurch, November 29. At a meeting of the Ohristchurch Women's Christian Temperance Union, hold oii Wednesday, a vigorous discussion took place concerning the recent Te Oraugi Home trouble, and the following -.resolutions wore passed : , , "That this "Union strongly protests againpt the inhuman system pt punishment as practised at the le Oraugi Home as savouring more of barbaric times than the twenith century The Union considers that it is degrading to humiliate the unfortunate girl inmates in their own eyes and in those of their companions. Flogging, cutting off the hair, cell punishment, and similar brutalities incalculable harm is done in many ways, and such treatment of girls is an insult to the womanhood of the colony, and should not be tolerated by Now Zealand citizens." "The Union calls upon the Minister of Education to alter these barbaric practices by introducing a more scientific and enlightened system, and so allow the members to feel assured that his action in all matters is in the direction of justice and humanity." "That the recent circumstances only emphasise tbo necessity for local boards of control composed of men and women, which have often been asked for by this union and other -women's societies. This union also emphasises the groat need for careful'classificatioh of the inmates.'' "Thata vote of thanks ba accorded to the editor of the Lyttelton Times for his consistent and ablo advocacy of a more humane and enlightened system of management in connection with the Te Orangi Home and other State institutions."
