The weather was beautifully fine on resuming game to-day. The heavy rain on Saturday night had not affected the wicket, which played splendidly. , , , Carter missed E,hones when he had made 28 and Hardstaff had only 4 to : his credit when he was badly missed by Blaxlaud. Botli chances were off Cotter. , „ , Hardstaff had another let-off when he was 17. He lifted on from Me Oartuoy high up to the bowler, hut ho dropped an easy one in a childish manner. , , .. , Johnston with a beautiful ball got Rhodes’ off stump just as ho reached his half-century. Crawford, the newcomer, opened his score hy sending the leather clean into the shilling stand for six but his stay was only a brief one. Hardstaff reached 50 for an hour’s batting, hitting with the utmost freedom. With 71 to his credit he mis-hit McCartney, Waddy effecting a catch. Blythe was missed off McCartney’s next ball by Johnston.
The fielding of the home team was of an inferior character with the exception of Waddy, who fielded brilliantly. New South Wales were all out in second innings for 9(3, the Englishmen thus winning by 408 runs. Trumper opened with a fourer, following it with a brace and then tipped one of Fielder’s fast ones into Brauud’s hands in the slips, thus ending his career. N.S. Wales had consoled-itself that the deplorable display of the first innings was one of those things that occasionally happen to the best of teams, but tho_ opening of the second iuniugs dispelled all doubts, on the point of the English team with the batsmen’s reputation, now with the howlers. Their two innings on a splendid wicket did not show them up brilliantly as batsmen, but their bowling talent came out exceptionally strong. Fielder’s off theory was rapidly fatal to the home team, international veterans like Trumper and Noble could not leave this off stuff alone, and speedily fell victims to it. Diamond, Waddy and Hopkins followed suit. Fielder’s average at one time standing at 4 for 16, Duff bad a life when the total was 29, Brauud dropping the ball, but when Crawford relieved Barnes, bis second ball settled Duff aud bis third was fatal to Blaxland. The crowd became hilarious
at the downfall of its own men. Some enthusiasm was aroused by Cotter who wont for the bowling, while McCartney kept the other wicket up. The fast bowler had a couple of dozen to his credit when he was given two lives. He continued to belt Braund and Crawford to the boundary in rapid succession, scoring 49 in 38 minutes. Then lie lifted Blythe to Fane. Fielder with successive balls got Carter and Johnson. Scores: — M. O.O.—Second Innings.
