As the oil launch Pakeha, owned by Duncan Steele was returning irom Lake Itotoiti last night at 8 o'clock tho eugino had not been working well tor some time, and Steele went to examine it, having a lamp in his hand. No sooner had ho oponed the eugino room door than an explosion took place. Steele, Mead, Isles aud Godson were badly burned. Tho boat caught fire and all tho deckhous3 was Steele was badly burned about the hands, legs and head and Mead about the hands aud face. Isles suffered injury to his face and Godson's injuries were slight. The accident happened midway between the wharf and Mokoia island. A. E. Ku.-;:ib, who was in *ir> launch Alexandra went to rend-.r a-.sistanco and tho fire, was sub-.lued by tho time the boat readied tlm wharf. Mead is at prosvit i;: iiio Sanatorium. The oth'jr-; v.vut to their homes.
