Tiie Herald says that the Victorian Derby field was well up to tho average in point of numbers, and possibly in point of quality. Mountain King won tho raco with a length to spare, but by modus ot an impressive performance at the bottom of tho straight Peru appeared
to have his measure, and it was rather a case of Peru stopping than tho big coit going ou. It cannot bo said that Welcome Trist was ridden a good race as ho was kept in the roar division right round _to tho abattoirs and shortly after his rider was disappointed in trying to got up in tho inside, and the colt again tell hack to last and remaining there to the home turn in tho final struggle lie finished game enough and lost the second money by a head. Tho result so far as tho winner was concerned might have been the same under any circumstances, but Welcome Trist was asked to give Moantain King an almost impossible start from the homo turn. Taugaroa showed plenty of pace in the early stage of tho race but ho tailed to see it out. Master Foote, the Herald adds, was the greatest disappointment of the lot, but tho stroug wind was apparently much against him. The time was fair yet tho field seemed to got no pace on. Tangaroa, who led, was pulling double a,-, he showed thc|way down.

Apa and Frisco wore coupled cm the machine, which accounts for tho comparatively small dividend declared.
