Mr Jo-oph Ivcsk has-been appointed a member of the Licensing Bench for the district of Raugitikei, in j place of Mr J. Georgetti, resigned. A Brisbane telegram reports that three New Zealand settlers, representing others in the Taranaki district, have arrived seeking laud. The Anglican Church at Cheltenham will ho consecrated by the Bishop of Wellington on Sunday, November 3rd, and confirmation services will bo held at Raugiwahia and Cheltenham on Monday and Tuesday respectively. A meeting of ratepayers at Eketahuna last night passed a resolution that the Borongh Council proceed to take a poll on the proposal to borrow £3OOO for installation of electric 'light. A well-known Kiugsdown farmer informed a Thnaru Herald reporter that in his opinion there was fully as much wheat and oats sown this season as last. Ho also said that the crops in his district were coming on very well, especially the oats, which lie prophesied would yield 80 to 100 bushels to the acre.
The following schools have now entered for the' Fcildiug A, and P. Show Garden Competition Lyttou St. Pei Id mg, Maugawcka, Turakina, Ruahinc, ‘ Taonui, Kimholtou, Cheltenham, Apiti, Raugiwahia and Halcombe. This is two in excess of the number entered iast year. The Warrimoo has sailed for Sydney from Wellington with considerable quantities of sugar which had been hold over ponding the coming into force of tlte new Customs tariff, and were cleared at the Customs yesterday.
Charles Tipper, employed at Canada Roof quartz mine near Milton, committed suicide by hanging himself in his hut. Decceasod had been drinking heavily for some days previously and was very despondent. At the inquest tho jury returned a verdict of suicide by hanging while in a state of temporary insanity caused by excessive drinking. Tho training ship Amorkua sailed this morning? on her first sea trip. She will cruise about the Straits and Sounds for about ten days. Details available indicate that the takings at the Manawatu Show during the three days from gates and stands oalv a .'re £I3OO, about £IOO better than last year. The attendance '’yesterday was put down at 250,00 making 45,000 for the three days. The Tourist Department advises that the fishing season at Rotorua opened yesterday. About 100 anglers went out after midnight on Thursday, the total catch being over 600 rainbow trout, running in weight from 3 to 11 lbs. The fish were all in very good condition for this season of tho year, those caught in Lake Tarawera being quite fat.
Monday, 11th November will be observed as the King’s Birthday and as a Post Office holiday. Mails for all parts close at 8 a.m. Telegraph Office open from 9to 10 a.m., and 7to 8 p.m. Telephone Exchange open from Bto 10 a.m. Post Office closed all day. A delivery of borough letters will be made over the counter on Saturday evening 9th, from 7 to 8, but no delivery whatever on Monday 7, 11th. The Carters’ Union, Dunedin, has nominated Mr J. H. McCullough as workers’ representative on the Arbitration Court, and MrW. T. Young acting representative. The members of the Plasterers’ Union, also nominated Mr J. MI. McCullough as workers’ Representative and Mr Slater as acting member. Tins is the first occasion on which Mr Slater has been nominated for the position of acting member. William Cromblio, a youth about 10, blinked rather sheepishly in the dock at Auckland this morning when three charges of horse-stealing and asaultiug with intent to rob and robbing the person of five shillings wore read. He murmured in a very small voice that ho had nothing to say. It was stated that Crombio’s parents regarded him as iucorrigibe and would have nothing to do with him. Accused was remanded, till Wednesday.
Sir A. E. Remington, writes to correct an error which was made in our parliamentary report of October 30th. The numbers voting on lus amendment to reduce the area sot aside for endowments in tiie Wellington district were given as 30 to 3. "As a matter of fact,” says Mr Remington, ‘‘my amendment was the best supported of all the divisions to reduce areas, the voting being 3G to 24.”
The Premier has brought down a Bill which authorises the Postmaster-General to transfer from the post oflico account to the credit of the public account asum not exceeding 42300,000 and to issue debentures with interest at not less than the highest rate paid to depositors in the Savings Bank. *Tho money is to be expended on the erection o£ new post cilice buildings at Wellington and Auckland and in the procuring of suitable sites for them.
At a largely attended delegates from athletic societies hold'last night in Auckland it was gdeiedod to form an Auckland Province! district association. A motion to affiliate witlPthe present Union was not seconded. Kerposentivos from Wanganui, Fielding, Taranaki and Hawkcs Bay, at a subsequent meeting decided to form an Athletic Union for tho North Island. _ Considerable correspondence indicated that a Union, with hcadquaretrs at Invercargill was unsuitable.
A very pleasing ceremony took place in the Upper Tutaonui School on Friday last, when Miss Thompson, the assistant teacher, who was leaving for an appointment at Mangatoki, was presented by the children wit 1 ' a token of their esteem and affection. The gift took tho form of an aluminium mounted purse-bag. The presentation was made by two little girls, who ou behalf of the others expressed regret at her leaving, and host wishes for the, future. Miss Thompson then feelingly thanked the children, and wished them good-hye.
