THE NEW TARIFF.
Comes into Force To-day. Press Association. Invercargill, October 31. The coming into operation of the new tariff to .morrow has caused something of a flutter in Customs work. The principle changes are in rcgard to sugar, dried fruits and boots and shoes. The reduction in duties on tho first two has caused tho importer to allow stocks to fall as low as possible in order to oscapo beavier duties under the old tariff. Boot fifipoicoiS on the other hand, have cleared heavily. Sugar could not Bo bought in any quantity in" town 11day and some merchants had-sold eyo-’Y grain in store. Several wholesaid cloiilera in dried fruits to avoid having heavy stocks on liana at old duty rates shipped goods to Melbourne and back and have thus evaded duties.
