A MAORI TRAGEDY.
Per Press Association. Wellington, October 29. The Auckland Star’s Dargavillc correspondent says that a fracas resulting in a tragedy occurred on Saturday at Maropui, 13 miles from Dargavillc, causing the death of Waitcue Reihana, A native gathering was being held in connection witl) a christening ceremony. Early in the morning Reihana had an altercation with his wife, and walked away to an adjacent storc- ' house. His "wife followed, with a bridle in her hand to catch a horse. Shortly afterwards Reihana returned, his face covered with blood and exclaimed, “lam killed!” and later on foil unconscious, and died at night. His wife returned from a neighbouring settlement, not anticipating the fatality, and swooned on hearing of her husband’s death. After the inquest Peti Watene was arrested and charged with murder and remanded for a week. Eeitaua was 47 and his wife is 4(5, and there is a family of six children. Accused is a woman of high rank.
