ENGLISH RAILWAY TROUBLE.
Press Association —Copyright. JjOndok, October 24. Lord Claud Hamilton, chairman of the Railway Companies' Association, has issued a statement giving reasons why the railway companies are firmly resisting tho demands of tho Amalgamated' Society of Railway Servants. The Board of Trade, the statement declared, controls .the railways in many'respects, also the men's hours, and there is no further control by an irresponsible body. Railways cannot be moved or closed, nor, in the case of unions committing a breach of faith, can the railways order a lockout, whereas a union can order a strike. If the union's demands are recognised to be on equal terms with those of the railways, the latter will bo placed at the mercy of the unions. The statement concludes :—'' The demand for recognition is only the first, mare in a deep-laid campaign of the Socialist forces, impelling trades unions against individualism and capital.''
