MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

A special meeting was held on Monday night to pass the specail order of consolidated loans £13,800, less sinking fund, and deal with general business. Present: The Mayor (Dr. Sborman), Crs. Hilton, Lyons and Gould. ’On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Or. Gould, the special order as drawn up was passed. The following correspondence was dealt with: — From E. E. Snellgrove, claiming 5s which had been struck off his account for grave-digging in a recent charitable aidtease. He had not received the necessary 24 hours’ notice, hence the extra charge. Resolved to pay the amount. From Manager of Gas Works, drawing attention to circular from Labour Department in regard to wages. At present Council was paying Read, as gasfltter, etc., 8s per day, which was a low rate for the work done. He claimed the Union rate of wages should be paid for gas-fitting and present wages for other services, so averaging 9s per day. The stokers also requested an increase of pay. [The cost of extra wages would be largely met by increased production of coke, as it would be necessary to employ the stokers longer hours during the nest few months, the demand for which was larger than the output. The manager also applied for permission to start excavating for the new gas holder tank.—lt was decided to hold over the report to be dealt with at next ordinary meeting. The question of excavating was referred to the Gas Committee. The Park Committee recommended —(1) That the Mayor supervise operations in the park for the mouth of October. (3) That not more than 84s be spent during each month for caretaker’s wages during the summer months.:—The report was adopted on a division, Or. Lyon dissenting. The latter expressed his opinion that too much money had been spent in the past on the park without proper supervision, more particularly the cricket portion. He also stated he would give notice of motion at next meeting rescinding previous resolutions and outside appointments on the Park Committee.
