FIRE.

A lire broke out at Temuka this morning, vvhereby a block of four wooden buildings was totally destroyed. Tho firo when discovered had'a strong hold, and the brigade con lined its efforts to saving the properties adjoining and on the opposite side of tho street. Of tho premises destroyed two, owned by G. Bates and Co., and occupied by O. Angus, plumber, who with his familv occupied the rear portion of tho building as a dwelling, and Oamerou, tobacconist and hairdresser. Tho other two, tho property of Mrs O. Hornhrook, were tenanted by O. Winn, photographer, and Strange and Co., drapers. For a time it was feared that the firo would spread into tho Temuka Hotel, recently erected, hut tho brick wall saved it. The verandah and plate glass windows of tho adjoining shop were also destroyed while other shop windows across the street were damaged. Tho lire apparently stared in Cameron’s shop, 1 but there is no clue as to its origin, i Insurances: Bates, £-150, Royal; I Angus, £l5O, Manchester; Cameron, 5200, Norwich Union; Winn, £75, Phoenix; Strange. £IOO, Norwich Union and £IOO Victoria. Tho premises owned by Mrs Hornhrook were not iusiued, tho policy having been allowed to lapse a few days ago.
