OBITUARY.

Mr Henry Hanimond

We regret to record the death of Mr Henry Hammond, ■which took .place at Waitohi, 'Sancton, last evening. Mr Hammond had been in failing health for some time, and his death was not unexpected, btt.i liq retained ins cheerful disposition and clear mental outlook to tho very last. Ho was born on Juno 34th, 1840, and arrived in the colony /?J tho Pifeshito <53 years ago, at the ago of 3 years. Ho was the eldest sou of Mr Matthew Hammond, of Ifilleymoou, Bulls, and married in 1801 Miss Helen Oookburn, who survives him.

Mr Hammond settled at Waitohi 35 years ago aud lived, there for the rest of his life! He was one of the best known figures on the coast, and during the sixties took his full share in the strenuous life of the times. As ft gfockman and a judge of b£oc£ ho had no superior, and many can recall the genial welcome _ and unstinted 'hospitality' of V/aitohi, As a public man Mr Hammond did good service on the Mauawatu County Council, having represented thei Waitohi Riding for more than 20 years, until his retirement the other day. Mr Hammond’s death will ph* tiu> whole district into mourning. He loaves throe sous. Messrs Matthew Koi ysfi: John Hammond, Godfrey Hammond, and Wilford Stewart Hammond, fVfd_ eight daughters—MosdameS Jaff. A’Oopr.t, H. v . Hammond, W. J. Phillips, A. D. Scott, K, J. Didshury, Fred Purnell, J. W".' Scott, J. Richardon. Of the older generation fhoro still survive Mr Richard Hammond, Ohingaiti (brother), and Mrs (Major) Coleman, New {Plymouth; Mrs W. T. Galpia, Woodlands,’ fiartqn (sisters). The funeral will take place on Monday at Bulls cemetery, leaving Waitohi at 12 noon.
