RAPID TRAVELLING.
The Germau Railway Journal j claims that the greatest speed ever ■ attained in Europe hy a steam- ■ driven railway train has been reached on special trips recently between Munich and Augsburg on the Bavarian State railway system. The engines jjwhich were express train locomotives, pulled trains weighing 150 tons at tiro maximum speed of ninety-six and a half* miles per hour. The terrific pace was ; maintained for a considerable period, j Mr Peter Cooper Hewitt, of Hew ; York, has completed some remark- ; »ble trials of a gliding watercraft j which he has invented. _ j He had no difficulty in attaining a j speed of thirty-eight miles and ho i declared that with a similar vessel 1 of larger proportions he will be able to reach a speed of a hundred miles an hour. The main features of the vessel are an exceedingly shallow hull and planes, which enable it to glide over the water like a bird. j'
