"TWO-UP" AT TAIHAPE.
(Prom Our Own Correspondent.)
A man named George Stephens was arrested on Saturday afternoon and was brought before the local J. ’sP., Messrs J. P. Aldridge and H. W. Bennett, and charged with playing an illegal game, viz , ‘ two-np. ’ ’ On being searched at the lock-up two sets of double-headed copper coins were found on him. “double heads’’ and “double tails” and a “kip.” The evidence of the police proved that Constable Sweeney first 1 spottedU-tife school, and went and brought Constable Wade, and both Constables planted themselves behind a fowl house about a chain away and having heard and seen sufficient to justify them suddenly showed themselves" Four of the school got clean away but Stephens, who has a bad leg, eonld not and feigned drunkenness, on which he Was arrested and on being searched disclosed the “tools of tho profession” as described above. The evidence was very clear and tho Justices sent him to gaol for two mouths with hard labour, at the same time expressing tho wish that the other participants would he brought to justice also. Constable Wade said tho others were well known characters and there is little doubt that they will yet have to return to Taihape from which they made such a hasty exit. I do not think that a “two-up” school will bo all beer and skittles iu our town as the justices are determined to suppress auy such illegal tendencies.
