The Lord Mayor has opened a fund for reilof of the Murwilhunbah sufferers.
The mayor of the town has received messages of condolence from all parts, including Now Zealand; . Many of the homeless are sheltering in teiits supplied,fey the Colonial Sugar Oohipauy arid others are in the Houses of those who escaped, the lire. Good order prevails. A sad feature of the fire was the largo a mount of looting. A .baud of hooligans, while the flames were at their height, roamed round the town, looting the unprotected stores and houses. In some instances whore people had saved nearly everything, on returning to remove their tilings they found half were missing. The lock-up was amongst the buildings that suffered. The risllS wdie destroyed and the prisoners had to bo secured in the prison yard, which is covered with an iron grating. The Police Court is being held in the police stables. All the banks saved their books and valuables and have reopened business.
