THE VANCOUVER RIOTS.
Japan Claims Damages,
Press Association.— -Copyright. Ottawa, September 13. Mr Ishii, the Japanese representative here, said that Japan would not make an international incident out of the Vancouver riots. Japan would merely demand payment for the damages to the property of individual Japanese. Tokio, September 18. The local newspaper Jiji Shimpo to-day states that besides Sir Wilfred Laurier’s expression of regret, assurances have been given that measures will be taken to prevent incidents similar to that at Vancouver in future. A formal message was sent to the Dominion Government with reference to the matter.
Street Meetings Forbidden
The Japanese and Chinese at Seattle are arming and congregating in the Oriental quarter. Many Japanese servants have quitted American households. The Chief of Police, Wapponstoin, referring to threatened international demonstration of Japanese and Oorean Exclusion League at Seattle, declares that he will not allow them to obstruct the streets nor to provoke riots. Meetings in the streets are forbidden. The (newspapers at Seattle show that the best element in the population deplores the agitation and welcomes Japanese immigration. The Japanese and Chinese have been peremptorily warned to quit Bellingham. Japanese working in the canneries, are armed and threatened to resist attempts to expel them.
Mayor Behune has asked Sir Wilfred Laurier for permission to use temporarily the armouries for the purpose of housing the Hindoos sanitarily. London, September 13. According to the Daily Telegraph’s Victoria correspondent the Mouteagle landed Orientals at Vancouver without disturbance.
The Morning Post’s Toronto correspondent foreshadows an agreement with Japan restricting immigrants to Canada to 500 annually, apart from those exempted, like professional men and students.
