MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL

(jThe monthly meeting was 'hold yesterday. Present Crs. Wilson (chairman), McKenzie, Masters and Barber. Leave of absence was granted Ora. Dalton and Kendall. It was stated, that Or. Kendall was ill in bed from influenza. COERSFON DE NOE.

From H. Hammond, tendering bis resignation ns Councillor, owing to ill health. The resignation was received with regret, and it was resolved, on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Or. McKenzie, that the Council desires .to place on record its high appreciation of tho long and valued services of Mr Hammond, of Waitohi, rendered to the ratepayers as Councillor of tho Mauawatu County Council, also tho valuable assistance ho has boon to other Councillors from his wide experience and knowledge, and that the Council hope ho will have a complete and rapid recovery from his temporary illness. From Treasury, notifying that loan of £93 13s 3d on account of Ohakea protective works was available, also £SOO for construction of Kopntara road. . From G. L. R. Scott, complaining of the delay on tho part of tho Council in tho payment; of his ac-* count for surveying Shannon road deviation. - From J. Glover, stating in respect to his vacant section at Rongotea'j on which the house had been burned clown, that ho had boon charged full rates.—Rates struck on old valuation and therefore cannot bo reduced.

From Department of Roads, stating that Government had ■ boon advised that it has no power to issno the warrant .authorising the work of repairing tho Whirokino bridge before the expiration of the two months stipulated in, section 18 of the Public Works Act.—lt was staled that as silt had again collected around tho piles the delay would not matter.

R SPOUTS. The Treasurer reported the balances of tho various accounts as under General account, dr. £3350 2s 7d; loan account, cr. £C29 13s sd. Amounts available for expenditure : Saudon Ending £222 0s 4d, Mount Stewart £235 Is lid, Waitohi £lO4 8s 7d, Rougotoa £2<iS 7s 4d, Carnarvon £I3G lls sd, Kawa Kawa £BO IGs 9d, Awahou ;£33 Is 4d, Vv’hirofciuo £lO4 12s 9d.

Tho Tramway Manager reported a credit balance of £23 13s for tho month. Both goods and passenger traffic had been satisfactory.

The Overseer reported that iu order to give proper drainage to tho Makowhai school work would have to be done at a cost of £2 10s._ Good progress was being made with tho Oliakoa protective works, but _ a recent fresh iu tho river had increased the cost by £35. Ho had cancelled Mr .W. R. Anderson’s contract for delivery of metal on Sanson’s and Jones’ Lines. He reported in reference to tha tramway that the weather bad been unfavourable .for carrying out the work iu connection with regrading tho Carnarvon incline, yet fair progress had been made. Two of the men were still willing to pay Is per week each for the use of a jigger, if tha Council would purchase one for their use. Or. McKenzie advocated running the tram one day more a week, as in his opinion an increased traffic would’result, if not at once, after a time, 'when people began to appreciate the convenience, and ho beliived it would pay. After some discussion on the subject the Tramway Manager was directed to report on the extra cost of running a tram on Thursdays, returning from Foxton after the Sale, also to communicate with Messrs Dimock and_ Co., asking what number of pigs they could send weekly over the tram line during the summer months.

OTHER BUSINESS. It was resolved that the Overseer attend to the request of the Makowhai School Committee ro clearing drain in front of the school. That the Tram Manager he instructed to place outstanding _ accounts in the hands of the solicitor for collection.

That the tender of H. Behrent for work on the river, bank line at £44 17s be accepted. That tiie punt, wire rope, etc., at Scott’s Ferry bo sold, provided the Rangitikei County agree to the sale. That alternate tenders he called for wo/k on Koputara road, namely, for forming and metalling about 60 chains, and for forming and metalling the whole length, about 100 chains. Tenders to be in by next meeting. That the action of Or. McKenzie iu regard to leasing the reserve at Scott’s Ferry-to James F. McKelvie ha endorsed.
