The annual meeting of tbo Horowhenua Chib opened yesterday on the pleasantly situated course at.Lovin. The track was very sift consequent on recent heavy rains, but the lawn and outside paddock were in very fair condition. The attendance was satisfactory, the weather fortunately clearing off tine in the morning and remaining so all day until the last race was about to be run. The racing on the whole was very interesting, moro especially the contest for the Cup, in which the good field of 11 faced the starter. The finish was an extremely close and exciting ono. At the turn into the homo straight almost the whole field were clustered, and in a ding don" go from the distance all whips were vigorously applied and victory rested with the biggest outsider of the lot by a three-quarter length margin, only a head and neck separating the next throe horses.

These two showed tho way round the bend with Moata their nearest attendant. Hiro was lirst into the straight, Moata and Matajri running next, Taugimoana dropping back. All whips were out at the distance, and a slashing finish took place, in which Hiro maintained a bare three-cpiarter length advantage at the post.
