Padherston N., September 10. The Supreme Court commenced the criminal session to-day. There are eight oases on tho calendar against eight .persons. In his charge to tho Grand Jury Judge Button said nono of tlio cases wore serious, v/itli oho exception, that of a charge of assault with intent preferred against a Maori who brutally assaulted a girl .at Kakariki recotuly.

A true bill was found against Richard Daly fox alleged false declaration, but the first case before tho Court is a cliarg of indecent assault preferred against Alex. McKee, which was adjourned from the previous sitting. Wellington, September 10. George Harold Nielson, who pleaded guilty at Carterton to a charge of torgrey aud uttering, was, in consideration of his previous good record, admitted to probation by Justice Cooper to-day. Timaexi, September 10.

Tho sittings of the Supreme Court opened here this morning before Judge Chapman, who congratulated the district on its freedom from crime of a serious nature. There are only three criminal cases, one of these being against the lata town clerk at Waimate, who is charged on several counts with having dealt fraudulently with certain moneys entrusted to his care. The civil list is a lengthy one, At the conclusion of the ordinary sittings a Royal Commission will sit to determine the question of whether Waimate Borough should be included in Timaru Harbour district.
