Tho defence are calling hundreds of witnesses and the proceedings are protracted. Sydney, September 7. The underwriters have received a cable announcing that tho GormauAustralian steamer Plauen, bound from Sydney to Antwerp, was towed into Yigo in a sinking condiitoii, the vessel having been in collision. The weather is exceptionally dry. Tho rainfall for July and August was the lowest for 49 years.
Melbourne, September 7. Diphtheria is very prevalent in the city. The chairman of the Board of Health states that infected children are kept waiting for hours by outpatients in the hall of the Children’s Hospital and the disease has thus spread in tho patients department.
